Lori Shepherd is the Executive Director of the Tucson Jewish Museum and Holocaust Center (TJMHC) on Stone Avenue in downtown Tucson. It is housed in the original and first synagogue in Tucson dating to 1910.

Description
This course explores the lives and legacies of the Jewish men and women who shaped the frontier landscape of Southern Arizona from the mid 19th century through the early 20th century. Through historical accounts, archival photographs and oral histories, we will examine how these individuals established businesses, helped build the broader communities and maintained their cultural identify in a region defined by its rugged isolation and diverse population This two part class will challenge the idea of a monolithic American West by exploring the diverse origins of Jewish pioneers including merchants from Germany and Eastern Europe as well as immigrants from Mexico and other parts of the American Southwest.
