Should Political Leaders Control Our History? – Jim Williams, 3 sessions on Mondays, beginning Oct 21 at 2:00 p.m. in Kiva
$10.00
3 Wednesdays at 2:00 p.m. October 21, 28 and November 4 in the Kiva Room.
Description
This class will focus on the conflict between historians who write about the past and political leaders who try to shape history for their own purposes. Many dictators, monarchs, presidents, prime ministers and other political leaders have tried to shape the historical narrative to suit their ends. The discipline of history, on the other hand, has become more precise and scientific in its approach over the past one hundred years. Historians examine original documents and eyewitness accounts to accurately explain events and trends in a broader context to show how they fit into the bigger picture. In this class we will examine controversies that have involved historians and political leaders in the past and present.
