Description

Marie Curie was a Polish-born French physicist and chemist who pioneered the study of radioactivity, a term she herself coined.  She became the first woman to win a Nobel Prize and remains the only person ever awarded Nobel Prizes in two different scientific fields.

Louis Pasteur was a French chemist and microbiologist who developed pasteurization to prevent food spoilage and created pioneering vaccines for anthrax and rabies, saving countless lives.

Rachel Carson was an American marine biologist and writer whose work exposed the dangers of environmental pollution, especially synthetic pesticides.  Her landmark book Silent Spring (1962) ignited the modern environmental movement.

John Wesley Powell was an American explorer, geologist and Civil War veteran best known for leading the first official U.S. government expedition through the Grand Canyon in 1869, a landmark feat of Western exploration.

These four people overcame adversity, persisted after loss or illness, showed the courage to challenge accepted beliefs and continued the human story behind scientific change. 4 Wednesdays at 9:00 a.m., February 3, 10, 17 and 24 in the Kiva Room.
