Description
Since the dawn of civilization, humans have sought to understand their connection with the greater universe and have even tried to make correlations between celestial and terrestrial events through the practice of astrology. This presentation explores the roots of our human desire to discover our deep connection with the cosmos, and focuses on how modern science has revealed how intimate that connection truly is. Through the eyes of space-based telescopes, this visual journey will follow the creation of hydrogen and helium in the Big Bang, the formation of heavier elements as stars die, and the new research into the formation of ubiquitous cosmic dust that connects our existence to it all.
Presenter: Janet Wood is a volunteer for NASA’s public outreach program called Solar System Ambassadors which is coordinated by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena. Her degrees are in Geoscience education with an emphasis in planetary science. She regularly teaches in OLLI-UA, occasionally in ILR and is a Sun city resident.
