Description

Doo-wop is a vocal style of rhythm and blues music that originated in African American communities in the 1940s mainly in the large cities of the United States. It features vocal group harmony with simple lyrics usually about love, sung by a lead vocal and the harmonic singing of nonsense syllables (such as doo-wop). This class will start with the birth of Doo-Wop with the Ravens, Orioles, Penguins and the Platters.  The rock-n-roll explosion (1955-1957) featured the Cadillacs, Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers, Five Satins and Dell-Vikings.  The golden age featured the Silhouettes, Chantels, Crests, and Dion and the Belmonts.  The doo-wop revival began in the early 1960s with the Marcels, Earls, Devotions, Persuasions and Randy and Rainbows.  Lots of music!

Presenter:   Alan Krause, popular ILR presenter who also leads historic tours through the Presidio.

2 Tuesdays, March 4 and 11 at 9:00 a.m. in the Activity Center’s Hopi Room.
