Description

Until the arrival of the Southern Pacific railroad in 1880, Tucson remained a rough, remote, unsanitary mud pueblo.  The story is full of politics, exploitation, corporate maneuvering, skillful engineering, and economic determination. This 2 session class will first look at Tucson’s pre-railroad period and the Gadsden Purchase and then the town’s transformation through the robust investment of the Southern Pacific’s railroad from Los Angeles to New Orleans.  There is an optional visit to the Transportation Museum and its annual celebration of the Silver Spike.

Presenter:  Dave Devine is a well-known Tucson historian, UA graduate with a degree in urban planning, active in the historic preservation of Tucson’s central city, author of Tucson – A History of the Old Pueblo from the 1854 Gadsden Purchase and Historic Tales of Territorial Tucson, 1854-1912, numerous articles and monographs on local history.
