There is no charge for this course but you must be a member of the SCOV ILR and you must register ahead of time.
The Course: Famous Arizonans
Description:  Prominent Arizonans have had a major impact on life both in this state and the nation in the twentieth century. Carl Hayden was an Arizona congressman for over 57 years and sponsored legislation to provide much of the drinking water that we consume today. Del Webb built air bases and internment camps in World War II and started the first "Sun City" in 1960. Barry Goldwater and the Udall brothers helped create the wilderness areas and park system that we enjoy in Arizona. This course will focus on key individuals, including Barry Goldwater, Mo and Stewart Udall, Sandra Day O'Connor, Raul Castro, Del Webb, Carl Hayden and others. We will examine their lives and their social, political and economic impact.
"Famous Arizonans" will be taught using lecture, questions, discussion and power point presentations. No readings will be assigned, and handouts will be emailed to all participants so they may make copies on their own. This course was previously offered in 2012.
Instructor: Jim Williams taught American history for 35 years at the secondary level in Pennsylvania. He is a frequent ILR instructor. He recently wrote Claiming the Desert, a history of Oro Valley.
Registration: This course is available to ILR members and there is no charge. To register you must send an email to Randolph Myerson, ILR Curriculum Chairperson at: On the subject line write Famous Arizonans. Please include your full name in the body of the email.
