6. History of Broadway Musicals moderated by Jane Myerson

This is a course devoted to a history of Broadway musicals. It is based primarily on the “Great American Music: Broadway Musicals” course from the Great Courses. These lectures are by Professor Bill Messenger who has been a regular lecturer at the Peabody Institute. He’s an expert on musical composition, music history and music theory. As part of the course we will show two complete musicals as well as portions of musical videos. We will start our history with Irving Berlin and Jerome Kern and end with the 1970s to the present big hits. Hopefully the attendees will share some of their favorite musicals and participate in discussions.
