Description

8 weeks, Tuesdays, February 7, 14, 21, 28, and March 7, 14, 21 and 28 from 9 to 11 AM. Class size will be limited to allow for maximum participation. This eight-week course is based on the instructor’s published book, The Tragedy of Viet Nam, which is in its 5th printing. Before the extended conflict in Afghanistan, Viet Nam was the longest military struggle in American history, and also the first war the U.S. had ever lost. The Viet Nam War has been called many things, but there is much contemporary agreement that it was a war that nobody won. So why did it happen in the first place? And after expending millions of dollars and losing 55,000 American lives, what vital lessons were learned? Weekly discussions will be guided by chapters in Hearden’s book, copies will be provided.

Patrick Hearden is a new Sun City resident. Until recently retired, he had served as Professor of History at Purdue University for 25 years, specializing in the history of American foreign policy. His Ph.D, 1971, is from the University of Wisconsin.
